The California Induction Conference invites educators and induction leaders to reimagine what induction can be—moving beyond “business as usual” to create systems that are more responsive, equitable, joyful, and impactful. Over two days, attendees will engage in interactive sessions, expert-led workshops, and inspiring keynotes designed to strengthen support for new teachers, elevate instructional leadership, and foster mentorship that empowers educators, builds connection, and shapes a future-ready induction experience.

Meet the Keynote Speaker

Dr. Joe Sanfelippo

Dr. Joe Sanfelippo, retired Superintendent of the Fall Creek School District in Wisconsin, is an educational leader and author. During his tenure, the Fall Creek School District was recognized as an Innovative District twice by the International Center for Leadership in Education. Joe authored multiple books, including best-sellers "Hacking Leadership" and "Lead From Where You Are." Honored as one of 117 Future Ready Superintendents and among the 50 Personalized Learning Leaders by the US Department of Education, Joe was also named one of the 100 Most Influential Educators by District Administration Magazine. In 2019, Education Dive awarded him National Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Mary Vixie Sandy

Mary Vixie Sandy serves as the Executive Director of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. As a policy leader with more than 25 years’ experience working in higher education and government, she currently oversees public policy related to educator preparation and licensing and directs an agency that awards over 250,000 credential documents per year and accredits more than 250 colleges, universities and local education agencies offering educator preparation programs.

Nancy Frey

Michelle Shin

Nancy Frey, Ph.D., is a Professor in Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a member of the International Literacy Association’s Literacy Research Panel. Nancy has published in The Reading Teacher, Theory Into Practice, Reading Psychology, Early Childhood Education Journal, and Educational Leadership on research related to literacy, school leadership, and effective instruction. Current books include The Teaching Reading Playbook, Teaching Students to Drive Their Learning, Welcome to Teaching, and The PLC+ suite of books. In 2008 she was given the Early Career Achievement Award by the Literacy Research Association and is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame. She is a credentialed special educator, reading specialist, and administrator in California, and is a co-founder and administrator at Health Sciences High and Middle College.

Shin, Ed.D., is an author and consultant at Corwin and a faculty member at San Diego State University. She served as a classroom mathematics teacher, teacher leader, professional learning facilitator and coach, and site administrator in PK-12 schools. Dr. Shin brings research and experience to her roles and has a proven track record of excellence, transforming schools and systems in instruction, leadership, assessment, and belonging. After 20 years of service and 15 years as a consultant, she continues her life-long passion working with school communities to ensure that all students and families have access to a rigorous and welcoming educational experience.

Grace Dearborn

Jennifer Abrams

Jennifer Abrams is an international educational and communications consultant for public and independent schools, universities and non-profits. Jennifer trains and coaches teachers, administrators and others on new teacher/employee support, having hard conversations, collaboration skills and being your best adult self at work.

Grace Dearborn is an author, instructional coach, award-winning teacher, and international presenter specializing in classroom management, student engagement, and trauma-informed teaching. She has spent more than 30 years in education. Grace has served as a mentor teacher, literacy coach, curriculum developer, and professional development coordinator. Today, she is the Director and Lead Consultant for Conscious Teaching.
